Passions for Flowers
...A very rare Passion Flower, which has just opened for the first time in the UK for nearly 100 years.
This is perhaps the first time P. antioquiensis has flowered in the UK in over 100 year. Martin Murray of Tendercare Nurseries, Denham & Dr Les King (Passiflora Cultivar Registrar) have been the only two growers in recent years to have successfully flowered this amazing, high altitude Passion Flower, due to expert knowledge and an abnormally warm late summers .
P. antioquiensis is native to Colombia, where it lives at around 2000m - 3200m and is grown in small numbers as a fruit plant to be sold at local farmers markets. It is also grown in the USA by Strybing Arboretum, California and some private collectors in the same area.
P. antioquiensis can be found "on sale" in the UK but is all too often mislabelled as P. x exoniensis which a beautiful free flowering hybrid of P. antioquiensis.
