Garden Trees

Carefully selected and positioned, trees can make the most important contribution to the overall look and atmosphere of your garden. They will also affect the micro-climate beneath and around them and will have an effect on the growth of other plants and foliage.

Trees can provide focal points or hold the attention as specimens. They add height and a sense of maturity to mixed borders.

For people who do not have the room for full size parkland trees, the answer is to select from TENDERCARE’s range of smaller garden trees that grow to a limited size.

And what about screening? Small gardens often lack privacy and yet it is amazing how easily this problem can be overcome by the strategic placement of a garden tree or two.

At TENDERCARE, trees are grown in a vast range of forms, from those that come with a clear stem to the feathered variety which are clothed in branches from top to bottom. Some are multi-stemmed and others are bushy or are clipped or formed into unusual shapes to provide more dramatic impact.

In choosing a garden tree you have something that creates seasonal interest but doesn’t dominate the garden. The features it can add include foliage, flowers, berries and attractive bark.

Here are just a few pointers when planning for year-round interest using garden trees:

• An evergreen tree will offer foliage all year round and will be an asset in winter and early spring when there is very little else in leaf;

• A deciduous tree will come into leaf from spring to autumn and may offer changes of colour through this period, adding balance to the garden with many evergreens;

• Most trees with attractive blooms tend to produce them in either spring or summer so take this into account when planning year-round colour;

• Plant a tree for every part of the growing season: Salix caprea (pendula), for example, is a small tree that produces silvery catkins associated with the start of spring. Cornus kousa is a typical summer flowering tree while trees that offer brilliant red and gold tints are ideal because they come into their own in the autumn. Conifers look especially effective in winter when combined with ornamental grasses or with winter or spring flowering heathers.

TENDERCARE has hundreds of trees on display and has an extensive database full of familiar and very unusual varieties. We stock everything from acers to birches, hawthorns, cherry trees, rowans, willows and many, many more.

We use a consistent benchmark for measuring trees which is the circumference in centimeters, measured from a height one meter above soil level. This is listed in the description of each tree together with pot size, height, form and price, making it easy for you to choose which one you want.
