Which Acer should I add to my garden?

The Japanese maple is known for its intense colour of green, orange or red. It is usually a slow-growing shrub or small tree with a dense canopy. Probably the most well-known maple, the Acer palmatum, consists of hundreds of varieties, and some can even grow up to 10 meters high or wide. They have very narrow leaves and deeply incised leaves that can turn bright red in autumn. It’s probably no surprise then that Palmatum means hand-shaped. There are upright growing species and species with a spreading habit. Some Acers bloom, and some even can bear fruit. All in all, there is much beauty to choose from.

How to maintain your Japanese Acer?

As you probably guessed, the Japanese Acer is native to Asia, predominantly Japan, Korea and China. It was mainly the Japanese who have created some magnificent trees since the 7th century through centuries of breeding. Japanese Acers were first introduced to the UK in 1820 and have been popular ever since, primarily because of their architectural form and stunning foliage colours. Make your Japanese maple stand out by planting it as a solitary. They are pretty easy to maintain and can be grown in almost all soils. Plant them in a sheltered and semi-shaded spot in your garden, so damage to the leaves is prevented. Only prune the dead branches, but make sure to do it only in spring and summer.
